The first planes carrying migrant families, largely from Central America, landed in El Paso on Monday, Garcia said, and the number of flights are expected to increase in frequency in the coming weeks.
U.S. Border Patrol receives the families at its Central Processing Center in Northeast El Paso, which was completed in early 2020 to temporarily process and hold families and unaccompanied minors.
U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-El Paso) visited the center on Friday and told the El Paso Times she found a much-improved situation from 2018 and 2019, when families were temporarily held outside and children were left in crowded, unsanitary conditions border holding cells for days in El Paso.
