“Where is your brother?”

This is the question God asks of Cain… and the question God asks each of us today. Pope Francis asked this question in his homily during his first official trip outside Rome. He was visiting the Italian coastal town of Lampedusa, which serves as a landing site for many immigrants arriving in boats from Africa. Just recently, and tragically, a boat full of immigrants died at sea while trying to reach this spot. Pope Francis’ homily reminds us that these are our brothers; that God expects us to know where they are, to take on their suffering as our own.
