During the early 1980’s, when Central Americans were passing through Annunciation House, among the guests were those from Guatemala. They shared with us the reality that existed in the country. Our guests knew well the role the military played in the violation of human rights and that the orders ultimately came from way on high. For so many years, the people of Guatemala, including the hundreds of thousand of citizens who were forced to flee their country, have waited for a day of accountability.
It may have arrived.
Efrain Rios Montt, the former dictator of Guatemala, has been ordered to stand trial for genocide and other war crimes. What Rios Montt did is one of the reasons we had so many guests from Guatemala at Annunciation House. Remember the words of Dr. Martin Luther King: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
