Cada año decenas de miles de personas de alrededor del país y del mundo se reúnen en Fort Benning, Georgia, para pedir que se cierre la Escuela de las Américas/Instituto del Hemisferio Poniente por Cooperación de Seguridad. La escuela conocida como SOA ganó su fama en los ’80, cuando servía como campo de entrenamiento para ejércitos y paramilitares de Centro y Sudamérica. Los graduados del la SOA eran entrenados en técnicas contra insurgencia, o en otras palabras, entrenados a torturar poblaciones civiles. Durante las guerras civiles en El Salvador, Guatemala y Nicaragua, los que se graduaban de la SOA eran responsables de masacres de campesinos, de indígenas, de activistas y de líderes religiosos como el Arzobispo Oscar Romero y los mártires jesuitas de El Salvador.

Los huéspedes de la Casa anunciación con frecuencia conocían el impacto de la SOA muy bien. Durante los ’80, la Casa Anunciación aceptó a miles de refugiados que huían la violencia en Centro América, violencia perpetuada por graduados de la SOA. Ya habiéndose acabado la era de las guerras civiles, con muchos huéspedes huyendo de sus países por razón de la economía en vez de por razones políticas y la violencia, vemos como el papel de los militares y para militares ha cambiado ahora a seguir con la explotación económica y la agitación política que enriquecen al rico, en los EE. UU. y en Latino América, a costa de los pobres por todo el hemisferio.

Este Noviembre, del 16-18, se van a reunir otra vez activistas, estudiantes y personas de fe en las puertas de Fort Benning a dar testimonio en nombre de huéspedes que han estado con anterioridad en la Casa Anunciación y de miles de otros mártires de Latino América, y a pedir que se cierre la Escuela de Asesinos. La comunidad de voluntarios de la Casa Anunciación va a ser parte de la protesta este otoño para dar testimonio, aprender y compartir sobre nuestra organización y la realidad de la frontera con miles de otros activistas de todas partes del país que son parte del movimiento a favor de la justicia. Seguimos discerniendo como va a ser la participación en dicha reunión conectada a una acción local, a la educación continua, y al enriquecimiento de nuestro trabajo de hospitalidad aquí.

Every year, tens of thousands of people from around the country and world gather in Fort Benning, Georgia, to call for the closure of the School of the Americas/Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (SOA/WHINSEC). The SOA gained its notoriety in the 1980s, serving as a training ground for armies and paramilitaries of Central and South America. SOA graduates were trained in counter-insurgency techniques, or in other words, trained to torture civilian populations. During the civil wars in El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua, SOA graduates were responsible for massacres of peasants, the indigenous, activists, and religious leaders such as Archbishop Oscar Romero and the Jesuit martyrs of El Salvador.

The guests of Annunciation House frequently know the impact of the School of the Americas all too well. During the 1980s, Annunciation House accepted thousands of refugees fleeing violence in Central America, violence perpetuated by SOA graduates. With the era of civil wars now over, and most guests fleeing their countries because of economic, instead of political, violence, we can see how the role of militaries and paramilitaries has changed to one of upholding the economic exploitation and political turmoil that enrich the rich in the United States and Latin America at the expense of the poor throughout the hemisphere.

This November 16-18, activists, students, and people of faith will again gather at the gates of Fort Benning to witness on behalf of former guests of Annunciation House and the thousands of other martyrs of Latin America and to call for the closure of this School of Assassins. A community of volunteers from Annunciation House will be joining the protest this fall to witness, learn, and share our organization and the border reality with the thousands of other activists from around the country who are part of the movement for justice. We continue to discern how it is that our participation in such a gathering will be connected to local action, on-going education, and an enrichment of our work of hospitality.
